A luffa vegetable sponge is actually a natural sponge made from the dried-out parts of the luffa plant - a gourd, essentially. You can eat the young luffa fruit as a vegetable, but when it gets left to dry out, the inside develops a weird sort of sponge-like texture from a bunch of fibres.
When the luffa fruits are fully grown and harvested, they get dried out completely, then peeled. The seeds and soft bits in the middle are then taken out - leaving behind the sponge. Weirdly enough, people use these things for a lot of tasks like washing themselves in the bath, popping off a bit of old skin, washing up and just general cleaning.
The Luffa vegetable sponges are pretty cool in that they are totally biodegradable and eco-friendly because they're made from what is basically a natural material. Because they dont contain any of those nasty chemicals inside the average plastic sponge, luffa sponges are the sort of product people are going for when they want to switch to something more sustainable.
